Bus Routes and Travel around USC

The Comet is the city of Columbia's public bus transportation service that provides routes all throughout Columbia. Their website Catch The Comet for all the information you need about routes, times, and availability. A one way pass is $2.00 and a monthly pass is $40.00. Certain routes operate on the Soda Cap shuttle which is free!

Drivers License Information

Every state in the US recognizes foreign driver's licenses and in most cases the international license will be valid for up to four months after the date you enter the U.S. After that you will have to obtain a drivers license to legally drive in the U.S.

How to Obtain a Drivers License in South Carolina

  • You must first learn the rules of the road available online, since you are required to take a written test before receiving a beginners permit

  • After you have obtained a beginners permit a licensed driver must teach you how to drive

    • There are private services that teach classes for a fee. These can be found by searching "Driver training services in Columbia, SC"

  • You must take a road test in a private car at the local South Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) office in order to receive a driver's license. Once you have passed the road test, you must show your passport and visa information before you are presented with your physical card.

  • SCDMV Form MV-94 describes all of the requirements and information needed for international students to obtain a SC Driver's License
